Dublin Coffman built a 13-point halftime lead, then survived a fourth-quarter rally to beat Hilliard Davidson 20-14 on Friday, Oct. 9, at Coffman.
The Shamrocks jumped ahead early. By the 10:04 mark of the second quarter, Coffman led 10-0. The advantage grew to 13-0 by halftime, according to Coffman Athletics on X.
Davidson opened the fourth quarter with a score to cut the deficit to 13-7. Coffman answered, pushing the lead to 20-7 with 5:59 remaining. But Davidson was not done. The Wildcats scored again with 1:21 on the clock to pull within six at 20-14.
Coffman's defense held from there.
The win moved coach Nick McVay's squad to 2-6 on the season. Davidson dropped to 2-6. Three regular-season games remain for both teams, according to NBC4's Week 8 scoreboard.
As we reported Thursday, all three Dublin high school football programs sat outside the OHSAA playoff field heading into Week 8. Coffman entered the Davidson game at 1-6 after losses that included a 39-7 defeat at Big Walnut on Aug. 28 and a 31-3 loss to Olentangy Liberty in Week 7, according to the Delaware Gazette. Friday's result was only the Shamrocks' second win of the fall.
Quarterback Jack Morris, a junior and two-year starter, has been the engine of Coffman's offense this season. Morris scored on a 41-yard touchdown run in the Shamrocks' Week 3 game against Dublin Jerome on Sept. 4 and found the end zone on a three-yard keeper in the Big Walnut loss. Individual scoring details from Friday's game were not available.
The other Dublin programs also played Friday. Dublin Scioto fell to Delaware Hayes 20-7. Dublin Jerome lost to Olentangy Berlin 17-10. Cleveland.com reported 17-0 while the Columbus Dispatch listed 17-10.
Coffman visits Upper Arlington at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, then closes the regular season at home against Hilliard Bradley at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23.
