Dublin Jerome's boys golf team won its second straight OHSAA Division I state championship on Tuesday, Oct. 13, running away from the field at NCR Country Club in Kettering.

The Celtics shot 574 over two rounds, beating Cincinnati St. Xavier by 25 strokes, according to ohio.golf. Jerome opened with a 1-under-par 283 on Monday, Oct. 12, building a 13-stroke lead it never relinquished.

Senior Brady Barnum claimed back-to-back individual state titles, finishing at 3-under-par 139 (66-73). He fired a 5-under 66 in the opening round to seize a four-shot lead. A final-round 73 gave him medalist honors by two strokes over his younger brother, sophomore Blaise Barnum, who posted 1-under 141 (71-70).

The brothers went 1-2.

It caps a banner fall for Brady Barnum, who represented the United States in the Junior Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club in September. Speaking to NBC4 ahead of that event on Sept. 18, Barnum said, "My game is as close as perfect as it's probably been."

Evan Menges and Harrison Young also competed for Jerome's boys squad, along with Colton Altenburg. A Columbus Dispatch photo gallery showed Menges holding the championship trophy and Barnum standing alongside coach Brad Sparling to receive it.

Girls finish runner-up

Jerome's girls team, the defending state champion, finished second with a 606, 13 strokes behind Rocky River Magnificat's 593, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

Jerome trailed Magnificat by nine shots after the first round. Jerome’s four final-round scorers all improved their scores, but Magnificat pulled away with a 292 on Oct. 13.

Junior Nikitha Suresh led the Celtics, tying for seventh at 145 with a final-round 71. Junior Mallory Quickel tied for 15th at 151. Junior Adella Pawlowski placed 26th at 157 after cutting nine strokes with a second-round 74. Sophomore Maya Faustino tied for 28th at 159.

Celtics coach CD Butcher told the Dispatch his players lost focus on three holes during the opening round but regrouped for the final day, adding that Magnificat was simply the better team.

Suresh said the team stayed at NCR's range and putting green until after the facilities closed on Oct. 12, putting in extra work before the final round.

The championship is the Jerome boys golf program’s 11th state title, according to the Dispatch. The state tournament closes the Celtics' fall golf season.
