A tropical houseplant shop with a tissue culture lab in the works has landed in Historic Dublin, giving plant collectors a new reason to browse S. High Street.

Over Grown, founded by partners Nate and Jess Hurst, opened its second brick-and-mortar location at 46 S. High St. in June. The shop carries roughly 250 plants across two rooms: one for retail, the other reserved for hands-on workshops like cactus-garden building and private events such as birthday parties.

Co-founder Nate Hurst told Columbus Underground in a profile published Monday that he sees the Dublin store as distinct from the couple's flagship in Uptown Westerville. He described the Westerville shop at 10 N. State St. as the flagship and the Dublin location as the "experience location," where customers can book the activity side for group events at any time rather than waiting for scheduled class dates.

The Westerville store dedicates its entire floor to retail and holds about 350 plants. Dublin's split layout is built for interaction.

Tissue culture lab by end of August

The biggest differentiator is still taking shape. Hurst said the Dublin store is launching a tissue culture lab that will let staff grow dozens of plants from a small portion of a mature specimen. The technique opens the door to rare tropical variants not commonly available in Ohio. Because the plants will be propagated in-house rather than shipped from out-of-state greenhouses, Hurst said they can be priced lower.

"I'm just really excited about the opportunity to showcase a lot of rare stuff, because there's a market for it here, and we want to be able to do it at the right price for folks," Hurst said.

He said the first plantlets are expected by the end of August.

From pop-ups to two storefronts

The Hursts started selling plants at local markets in late 2023, opened a first storefront in Sunbury in 2024, then closed it in search of heavier foot traffic. The Westerville location followed in 2025, and Dublin opened this past June. Hurst said the long-term plan is to open one more local store before expanding beyond Columbus.

The Dublin shop is open Tuesday and Wednesday 11 a.m.–5 p.m., Thursday 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Friday 11 a.m.–7 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday noon–5 p.m. It is closed Monday, according to the shop's website. An upcoming Plant Bingo event with Uncorked is scheduled for Aug. 25, at 6 p.m.; tickets are $10 and were listed as nearly sold out as of Aug. 19.
