Dublin Coffman junior running back Gavin McClain was named the program's Week 2 Challenge Player of the Week, the team announced Aug. 27.

The weekly award, presented by Raising Cane's, recognized McClain for his practice performance ahead of the Shamrocks' Week 2 matchup against Big Walnut. The Dublin Coffman Football account on X said McClain was running with authority and like a man on a mission during the week, helping prepare the Rocks defense for the upcoming game.

McClain is the second Shamrock to receive the recognition this season. Sophomore quarterback and defensive back Jai Boyd won the Week 1 Challenge Player of the Week ahead of Dublin Coffman's season opener at Bishop Hartley on Aug. 21. Boyd was recognized for making plays in the defensive secondary, at receiver and at quarterback during that preparation week.

The award highlights practice effort rather than game-day statistics. Both McClain and Boyd were honored for the way their work in practice elevated the team's preparation for the next opponent.

Big Walnut presents a significant test. The Eagles made back-to-back state semifinal appearances heading into the 2026 season, according to NBC4. That recent postseason pedigree makes the matchup one of the early-season measuring sticks for a Coffman squad still establishing its identity in 2026.

A specific date and kickoff time for the Big Walnut game have not been confirmed in available schedules, though central Ohio high school football games are typically played on Friday nights.
