Dublin Coffman dropped to 1-4 on the season after a 42-35 homecoming loss to Grove City on Friday, Sept. 18.

The Shamrocks could not contain Grove City senior running back Blaike Jackson, who carried the ball 44 times for 436 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He added a fifth score on special teams, finishing with 534 all-purpose yards, according to the Columbus Dispatch. The Dispatch, citing Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) records, reported that Jackson's 534-yard night ranks sixth all-time among central Ohio running backs in single-game all-purpose yards.

Jackson was already on a tear this fall. In Week 2, he rushed for 97 yards and three touchdowns in a 48-47 win over Westland, scoring in the final nine seconds. Grove City quarterback Coby Smith also played a role in that comeback, completing 19 of 30 passes for 262 yards and rushing for 129 yards on 15 carries after returning from a third-quarter injury.

Coffman kept it close

The Shamrocks trailed 28-21 at halftime but matched Grove City score for score in the third quarter. The Greyhounds led 42-35 at the end of the third, according to updates posted by Coffman Athletics on X.

Neither team scored in the fourth.

Coffman entered the game at 1-3 after opening with a win over Bishop Hartley, then dropping games to Big Walnut (39-7), Dublin Jerome (45-28) and Pickerington North (35-0). As we reported Sept. 24, all three Dublin football programs trailed the OHSAA playoff cutoff in the first computer ratings of the season.
