Dublin Coffman fell behind 29-0 before halftime and never recovered in a 39-7 loss at Big Walnut on Aug. 28, according to Columbus Dispatch scores.

The Shamrocks dropped to 1-1 after opening the season with a 51-27 win over Bishop Hartley. Big Walnut, a two-time defending Region 7 champion, improved to 2-0.

The Golden Eagles scored early and often. Coffman trailed 15-0 with 3:14 left in the first quarter, according to Coffman Athletics score updates on X. The deficit grew to 22-0 with just over a minute remaining in the opening period, then ballooned to 29-0 at the 10:44 mark of the second quarter.

Coffman managed just seven points in the loss.

Big Walnut entered the season as one of central Ohio's most dangerous programs. The Golden Eagles went 25-4 over the past two seasons, reaching the Division II state semifinals both years, according to a Cleveland.com preseason preview. Their roster features quarterback Eli Stumpf, a Michigan State commit who threw for 2,436 yards and 31 touchdowns with just two interceptions last season. Running back Nolan Buirley, a Northwestern commit, was the All-Ohio co-Offensive Player of the Year in Division II after rushing for 2,277 yards and 30 touchdowns.

The game was one of the featured matchups on NBC4's Football Friday Nite broadcast.

The loss is a reality check for a Coffman program playing its 80th season. All three Dublin high school football programs are competing in Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I this fall, the first time all three have played at Ohio's highest level since 2012, according to Dublin Ohio Daily. Dublin Scioto opted up from Division II to join Coffman and Jerome at the top classification.

The Shamrocks won't have long to regroup. Coffman hosts Dublin Jerome on Sept. 4, in a Week 3 crosstown matchup.
