State troopers will enforce a zero-tolerance policy against impaired and reckless drivers on Interstate 270 over the Halloween weekend, the Ohio State Highway Patrol announced.

OSHP troopers and the patrol's Aviation Unit will work alongside the Franklin County Sheriff's Office starting Saturday, Oct. 31, to monitor traffic and pull over dangerous drivers during the two-day operation, according to WBNS 10TV. Dublin Police Department joined a similar I-270 enforcement operation in July.

"Our highest priority this weekend is keeping our roads safe, and that is why troopers will have zero tolerance for dangerous and impaired driving," OSHP Capt. Eric Caudill said. "If you plan on consuming anything that impairs your ability to drive, it is important to plan ahead for a safe ride home."

OSHP data shows impaired driving is a leading factor in crashes that cause serious injuries or fatalities. The patrol cited 531 fatal crashes in Franklin County between 2021 and 2025.

Earlier I-270 crackdown

The Oct. 31 operation follows a similar I-270 enforcement push in July.

Troopers caught 19 drivers traveling faster than 100 mph on the outerbelt during the July operation. One trooper clocked a driver at 126 mph. The patrol reported 961 speed citations, 84 seatbelt violations, 121 distracted driving citations and two impaired-driving arrests, 10TV reported.

Free rides available

Drivers who plan to drink have another option. The Ohio Traffic Safety Office is offering up to $15 in free Uber or Lyft credits through its Project Plan Ahead program, NBC4 reported.

The credits are available between 5 p.m. Oct. 29 and 3 a.m. Nov. 2 while supplies last. Rides must be requested on demand, not booked ahead of time, and Franklin County is among the seven eligible counties. Any fare above $15 is the rider's responsibility.

The program launched over Memorial Day weekend 2026, when 2,000 vouchers were claimed and more than 1,200 rides were taken. That weekend saw the lowest number of traffic fatalities in 18 years, according to the Ohio Traffic Safety Office. None of the six fatalities that weekend were believed to be OVI-related.

During the 2025 five-day Halloween reporting period, 19 people were killed in 19 fatal crashes. Thirteen were OVI-related.

Residents who spot an impaired or reckless driver can call #677 to reach the nearest OSHP post.
